Can the victims of ';trial by the media'; ever be ';cleared'; by the public?

Continuing from my previous question, I want to know whether criminal suspects, who are subject to trial by the media, can ever be accepted as innocent by the public, even if they are found innocent in court, because of the media coverage. For example, Colin Stagg was accused of the murder of Rachel Nickell, and was subsequently destroyed by the media. Can he ever return to a normal life? Can the victims of ';trial by the media'; ever be ';cleared'; by the public?
No, high profile cases that are depicted in the press as 'trial by media' embed themselves into peoples memories and are almost impossible to shift.

Even worse is when a public figure is involved, people tend to take the view that 'there is no smoke without fire'.Can the victims of ';trial by the media'; ever be ';cleared'; by the public?
There are groups of people who do not follow every story of convictions and they are used to people hiding facts from them but they are not dumb on matters and if anything they can give a second conviction weather the courts found them innocent or guilty or even if they were forgiven by the courts. To answer your question yes you can regain your dignity as long as you understand that you can not win in the battle of spirits in your country because you could be brought down for a final time and if the public has not convicted you then you are free to regain a new stand.
Not really. They will have it hanging over them, right or wrong, for the rest of their. Newspaper editors don't seem to give a damn once they've got a good witch hunt started.
