Have a look @windows media.com
Firstly, What WMP Codec are you running on?
I'd forget WMP for movies %26amp; download the combined community codec pack which includes Media Player Classic. You can find it at the link below.

I haven't found any files yet that it can't handle, and it's free.

VLC as mentioned by a previous answerer is good, but I think MPC has a better interface, it's lighter, you can scale/stretch fullscreen video using the numpad on your keyboard, and it generally gives better playback, especially if you want to play high definition video (eg: HDTV, HD DVD, BluRay material)
Redownload your mpeg file.

Install a codec.

If corrupted file is the download: Are you absolutely certain you are downloading from a safe website? If absolutely certain, and I mean 100%, then disable your firewall, and redownload it.

If corrupted file is not the download: Go to start, control panel, add/remove programs. Remove Microsoft Windows Media Player. Restart computer. Download the latest from http://www.microsoft.com. Reinstall.
You have to install some codecs first or you can download VLC Media Player and play your Mpeg files on that.
